The federal Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968) was signed by  Congress in April of 1968, just days after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Each year in April  the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and fair housing organizations across the country commemorate the signing of the Fair Housing Act with educational activities to highlight the state of fair housing.
